CORK A SUSTAINABLE MATERIAL

The harvesting of cork simply means that the bark of of the cork tree ( Quercus Suber) is removed from the exterior of the tree without any need to cut the tree down. As a sustainable material, not only is this tree regenerative in its material, but once the bark is removed the tree will absorb 3-5 times more CO2 then one which is left idle.

The fact that cork is biodegradable and renewable makes it one of the most sustainable materials that can be used to make wedge sandals.

HISTORY OF CORK WEDGES

The first cork wedge was created by Salvatore Ferragamo, an Italian designer who adapted the use of wood for the lighter more durable application of cork. His design became popular in WWII, when rubber and leather were in short supply, and the comfort of the cork wedge made it easy to walk while gaining the height of a traditional high heel.

Cork wedges peaked in popularity during the 1970’s with new bold designs, which moved with the pace of the 70’s fashion. During this period, wedges were not just worn by women, but men too sported the platform during the disco era.

The most current shoe fashion has been all about wedges, and cork wedges have been featured as the most comfortable sandal to strut your stuff in……or just enjoy a casual stroll. The reason being, they are a classic and stylish sandal, which supports your foot while giving the lift so many women love but often can’t handle with other heels. Sol Soles hand made cork wedges come in two distinct to allow for a short lifted wedge or a sexy high wedge.
